Al Avison Green Hornet Comics #37 Double-Spread Splash Page Original Art (Harvey Publ., 1947). This super-width panoramic double-truck threatens the Green Hornet -- modern-day descendant of the Lone Ranger -- with a cauldron of boiling steel. Not even a few deteriorated areas can dim the intensity of the opening scene for a story called "Molten Justice." Conventional wisdom ascribes the art to pioneer Avison, but a handwritten note on reverse credits Joe Simon, an even more influential pioneer and co-creator of Captain America. (Simon also was a champion of double-truck splash panels, a once-radical innovation.) Portions of the paste-up typeset logo and title-card have fallen away, and the corners and the vertical-center seam show considerable erosion and barking. This postwar series also is known as Green Hornet Fights Crime. Ink over graphite on Bristol board. Image area, 27" x 18.25". Pronounced age-toning. Good condition.
