Wayne Boring - Superman and Mr. Mxyzptlk Sketch Original Art (1948). Metropolis shimmers in the summer air as Superman stands tall, hands on hips, ever-vigilant. But look out, Kal-El, lurking nearby are two taunting visions of that troublesome prankster from the fifth dimension, Mr. Mxyzptlk. Wayne Boring's vision of the Man of Steel was so distinctive and powerful, it eventually became the established version of the 1940s and 50s, displaced only when Curt Swan assumed stewardship of this icon in the early 1960s. This fabulous drawing from 1948 showcases the appeal of Boring's approach. Superman's massive chest and arms, thick waist, and powerful, firmly set jaw, leave no doubt as to his incredible strength and noble bearing. Serving as the perfect foil to the resolve of the Man of Steel is trickster Mr. Mxyzptlk, with his oversized head and feet, tiny derby, and clashing clothes. His primary goal in life is to torment the caped Kryptonian with his magical gags. The image area measures 11" x 13", and the art is in Excellent condition. A rare and unusual piece.
