Walt Kelly Pogo Sketch Original Art (Simon & Schuster, 1951). The first major collection of Pogo -- apart from the Dell comic books, where Kelly had introduced the series -- was a 1951 anthology of the newspaper strips. Kelly adorned an introductory page from the book with a spontaneous drawing of his famous opossum character, inscribed to a fan named Mary Stiefer. The sketch appears to date from around the time of the book itself, for Pogo is drawn in that same early-Kelly style. The colophon page (at right) contains Kelly's Pogo-style version of the Simon & Schuster image of a farmer sowing grain, inspired by Jean-Fran├žois Millet's 1850 painting, The Sower. Framed image area, 14.5" x 11.5". Excellent condition.
