Thomas Rowlandson Character Studies Multiple-Image Sketch Original Art (c. 1810s). Rowland's mastery of caricature, most often seen in tinted etchings, is well displayed in this single piece containing four expressive figure studies. The artist is best known for his invention of John Bull, personification of the British Empire, but all his creations are soulful and humorous. Reed pen-and-ink on bond paper, stitched together at about midpoint with adhesive. Moderate age-toning and staining. Frame contains chipped areas. Image area, 11" x 7", framed to 15.75" x 12.25. Good condition.
