    Description

Robert Crumb - Placemat Sketch Original Art (c. 1980s-90s). A parade of odd and unusual characters inhabits this off-the-wall placemat drawing from the incomparable Robert Crumb. For many years, Crumb was known to pull out his ever-ready mechanical pen and doodle on his placemat when at a restaurant, waiting for his order to arrive. This particular piece is undated and unsigned, but clearly in his unmistakable style, on what appears to be a large, textured paper towel (but with no perforations), measuring approximately 15" x 8.25". The inked figures include a Rabbi-type with a word balloon saying "Oy Gevalt" (Yiddish for "Oh, God!" or "enough, already!") standing behind a 1940s Nazi officer; a man with a flat-top haircut who looks a bit like Charles Crumb Sr. (Robert's father); a slender mechanical man (with a penis) saying "Hup!" while gesturing with his hands; an annoyed-looking man wearing a derby (with a bit of whiteout correction fluid added -- Crumb always carries a bottle); a horned demon (with an even larger penis), and finally, a smaller, wild-eyed demon. We can only imagine what thoughts were filling Robert's head that night! Image sizes range from 1.5" to 3.5"; combined image size is 13.75" x 4". As is typical with Crumb placemat drawings, there are a few small food stains. Very Good condition.
