Robert Crumb - Placemat Sketch Original Art (1992). Underground cartoonist Robert Crumb is virtually a walking encyclopedia of 1920s-'30s musical knowledge, which is showcased in one of the sketches on this sheet of textured placemat paper. The first drawing here is noted as "Harry Charles, Atlanta Businessman who sent 'Buddy Boy' Hawkins to record for the Paramount Company in 1927" (Walter "Buddy Boy" Hawkins recorded only 12 songs between 1927 and '29, but is now considered a major figure in black country music). Next to Mr. Charles is a detailed drawing of a man wearing a tuxedo with the date October '92 written below. Finally, we have a scene with a man and woman having a conversation, with the woman standing in front of a framed image of a man in glasses (R. Crumb himself perhaps, wearing a tux). These drawings look remarkably similar to the work Crumb was doing at the time for David Zane Mairowitz's book on Franz Kafka, which was first released in 1993. The overall art image size measures 11" x 7.5" on paper with a folded size of 14" x 10.5". As is typical of the many placemats Crumb drew on while waiting for his meal, there are a few stains; fortunately none appear in the image area. The first drawing does have a bit of added whiteout correction fluid (Crumb never leaves home without a bottle). Very Good overall condition.
