Robert Crumb "Dopey Dawg" Placemat Sketch Original Art (1997). For many, many years, compulsive doodler Robert Crumb would travel with a sketchbook and his ever-ready mechanical pen. He's filled more sketchbooks than even he could keep track of. Crumb spends a lot of time eating out, and while waiting for his meal to arrive, he would take his paper placemat and fill one side with various doodles, cartoons, sketches of other patrons, or himself in comical situations. In fact, there have been three Waiting For Food volumes of these sketches published over the years. We suspect more than a few meals were paid off with these little masterpieces. This is one of them, with an unusual twist. The drawing, dated July '97, is in ink on the reverse side of a brown craft paper placemat, as a four-panel comic strip featuring a new character, Dopey Dawg. Dopey resorts to a primal scream to shake off an anxiety attack, with an overall image size of 6" x 4.5". The twist is on the front of the placemat -- it's from Le Micocoulier, a restaurant in Sauve, France, where Crumb has lived since 1991. Crumb himself did a drawing of the front of the building, which is printed twice, with a hand-lettered logo, all in green ink. Overall placemat size is 15.5" x 11.75, folded to showcase the hand-drawn art on the back. Sketch side is unsigned, but the printed art includes his "R. Crumb" signature. Very Good overall condition.
