Milton Caniff - Steve Canyon Portrait Sketch Original Art (undated). Milton Caniff's bold move of abandoning his successful feature, Terry and the Pirates, was a necessary step in creating his new comic strip, Steve Canyon. Steve Canyon took a much bigger role in promoting the interests of the US military. Milton Caniff spent much of his free time as a morale-booster and entertainer for the troops (along with other members of the National Cartoonist Society) and he often did "chalk talks" featuring his new characters. This large piece may have been done on just such a visit. The image area of the mixed-media on board drawing measures an overall 32.5" x 30", and aside from some edge wear and a few small tears in the paper, the art is in Good condition.
