Description

Milton Caniff, Clifford Sterrett, Frederick Opper, Mal Eaton, and Others Original Autographed Sketches/Notes (1930s-40s). Schoolboy cartoonist Jack Kent corresponded steadfastly with many working artists in the comics trade. Many provided him with original art, often inscribed, and encouraged the interest. Kent honored their kindnesses, in turn, by becoming an acclaimed comic-strip artist -- launching a strip called King Aroo around 1950. This generous batch of originals, etc., includes the work of Eaton (Peter Piltdown); Sterrett (Polly and Her Pals); Opper (Happy Hooligan); Caniff (a Terry and the Pirates vignette and an inscribed Dragon Lady print); Billy DeBeck (Barney Google); George "Lichty" Lichtenstein (Grin and Bear It); Johnny Gruelle (Raggedy Ann); Rudolph Dirks (The Captain and the Kids); Bill Holman (Smokey Stover); Otto Messmer (signed as trademark owner Pat Sullivan) (Felix); Zack Mosley (Smilin' Jack), and a number of other, indecipherable signatures. Varied media, varied page-stock. Image areas, 3" x 6" to 8.5" x 11". Average Very Good condition. From the Jack Kent Collection.
