Kelly Freas - Canvas Confidential "Nude Descending Staircase" Original Illustration (Dial Press, 1963). Here's a truly trippy piece in which Freas posits that a drunken husband returning home might see his wife much as Marcel Duchamp depicted the unclothed subject of his most famous painting. Interestingly, rather than try to recreate the image, Freas merely painted his drunkard character directly onto a reversed photograph of the masterpiece (note the title running backwards) and left it at that. This lot contains several preliminary pieces, including the photograph that was later reversed to give Freas his canvas, two pencil preliminaries featuring different versions of the drunk, and two more pencil prelims with the character more or less as he appears in the final painting. All are in Excellent condition overall. The photo/painting measures 7.5" x 9.5".
