Johnny Gruelle - Illustration for Children's Book (1919). Years before his "Raggedy Ann" stories about dolls and toys that come to life, Johnny Gruelle was illustrating children's stories in magazines and books with some of the most effervescent drawings of any era. This adorable 2.25" x 6" pen and ink and watercolor illustration was originally used for the children's book, "Fairy Stories," and even after more than eighty years, still sings with life. There is some minor aging apparent and pin holes outside the image area, but overall the art is in Excellent condition. Signed by Johnny Gruelle. From the collection of Richard and Wendy Pini. Richard says: "Perhaps the tales of Raggedy Ann and Andy aren't quite as universal now as they have been, but they're still popular, and Johnny Gruelle's style is as whimsical as ever. He also illustrated books other than the Raggedy Ann ones, and these two vignettes from his 'Fairy Stories' are, perhaps, even more charming than his more well known illustrations. It's not easy to uncover original art from older children's books, and I felt very fortunate to find these.
