George Luks Yellow Kid Hand-Colored Sketch Original Art (1898). Possibly the only surviving piece of Yellow Kid art by George Luks! And of course that feature was the first successful color comic strip in an American newspaper. When the Kid's creator R. F. Outcault was hired away by William Randolph Hearst, Luks took over the feature at the New York World. Luks was also accomplished in the world of fine art, in fact he has been called "a leading member of the Ashcan School of early 20th-century American art." This piece previously belonged to comics historian Rick Marschall, and we recall that when the late lamented Geppi's Entertainment Museum was still open, this was a key exhibit piece there. Framed. Ink and watercolor on paper. Signed and dated. The art has an overall size of 3.25 x 4.25". Slight soiling and a small edge tear at right, far from the figure. Very Good condition.
