Frank Frazetta's Original Art Sketchbook (circa 1949). Any artist worth his salt carries a sketchbook, a place to jot down ideas, do preliminary page layouts, or just to doodle in during a quiet time. Even a master artist needs a place to try out new ideas, and this slim Composition Book filled with unlined pages served as a sketchbook for one of the best-loved artists of the 20th century, Frank Frazetta. Like most artist's sketchbooks, this slim volume allows a rare peek inside the inner workings and private thoughts of Frazetta. The pages, 58 in number altogether and all but a few with drawings by the legendary artist, include breakdowns of a comic book story featuring dinosaurs (with a couple of fantastic T. Rex pages); lots of small sketches of nudes, fighting men, airplanes, animals, and more; a nicely detailed "Genghis Khan" full-page sketch in graphite; a small color study; and a few personal notes. Some drawings are preliminary studies for the "Nina" tryout strips he did for a proposed Sunday comic. The last page includes a couple of practice try-outs of his famous signature, and the inside back cover has five "F" autographs. A number of pages have been removed, are blank, or had sections cut, but there's still plenty of vintage Frazetta art on display here, and you can see all the images online.
