    Description

Frank Brunner - Original Preliminary Sketch for Elric Portfolio Plate (undated). After a short but memorable stint on such quirky Marvel '70s titles as Man-Thing, Dr. Strange, and Howard the Duck, Frank Brunner turned increasingly to the world of fantasy illustration, producing a line of portfolios that remain highly sought-after collectors' items even to this day. One of the finest of those portfolios was created around Michael Moorcock's hugely popular character, Elric of Melnibone. Offered here is a pencil preliminary for one of the plates in that portfolio, showing Elric and his cursed sword Stormbringer surrounded by the lifeless bodies of several mighty dragons. Rendered in pencil on vellum, this piece measures approximately 13.25" x 19", and is signed by the artist in the lower right corner. In excellent condition, there is a small piece of tape at each edge of the piece, and a small piece out of the top right edge; but these very minor flaws in no way detract from the exquisite craftsmanship in evidence here.
