    Description

Edgar Church - World War I Painted Illustration Original Art (1917). Edgar Church's name is venerated by comic collectors. His collection of comics, dubbed "The Mile High Collection" has become the "gold standard" of high-grade, pedigree comic books. As the discoverer of this legendary collection, dealer and owner of Mile High Comics, Chuck Rozanski has related the following insights, "Mr. Church's reason for collecting all those comics and magazines was that he needed them for reference for his commercial art career. During the period from about 1925-1953, he was on the staff of Mountain Bell, the phone company for the Rocky Mountain region. He worked in the advertising department, designing and drawing ads for the first commercial directories (later to be known as Yellow Pages). Judging by the huge collection of his artwork that I eventually managed to save, Mr. Church continued to produce freelance artwork all through the 1920s and 1930s. He had started his career as a freelance artist in about 1912, and had his own studio prior to going to work at the phone company full time." In addition to the comic book collection, Chuck Rozanski saved Edgar Church's original artwork and files, slated for almost certain destruction. As a tribute to Mr. Church, Rozanski has archived those materials as a collection. This dramatic painting of a World War I United States Army corporal leading a charge "over the top" is one of the very few Edgar Church originals to be offered in the marketplace. The overall size of this gouache on paper painting is 10" x 14", and the art is in Excellent condition. The back side of the paper has a Western scene penciled in and it was partially painted in. Here's a chance to win a wonderful work of art by the legendary Golden Age comic collector who had the rare foresight to preserve his comics in the best condition possible -- Edgar Church.
