Basil Wolverton - Original Illustration, "Joan Crawford" (1945). An early piece for Wolverton, this portrait of diva Joan Crawford anticipates the final evolution in the artist's strange and memorable style. Crawford, one of the most bizarre actresses in Hollywood, was the perfect subject for Wolverton, one of the most bizarre artists in comics, and he did caricatures of her throughout his career. This rendering is almost architectural in structure, looking more like a sculpture than a person, but that dehumanization of subject was an essential part of Wolverton's style. This piece, in immaculate condition, has an image area of approximately 11.5" x 13.25" and is signed by the artist in the lower left. A classic comic artist, Wolverton originals are few and far between, surfacing only rarely, and then commanding furious competition for ownership. We anticipate that this piece will be no exception.
