Al Williamson - Flash Gordon #1 Preliminary Cover Sketch Original Art, Group of 3 (circa 1995). When it came to drawing the adventures of Flash Gordon, Al Williamson proved himself a worthy successor to Alex Raymond. Besides his elegant and heroic approach to fantasy and science fiction characters, Williamson was also a dyed-in-the-wool Buster Crabbe aficionado. The handsome Crabbe was the perfect choice to play a screen Flash Gordon in the serials, and his exploits inspired the young Williamson to new heights in his figure drawing. These three pencil studies, drawn with a light touch, share many of the same elements as the published cover for Marvel Comics' Flash Gordon #1 -- a scantily clad beauty, a vine-draped pillar, and a futuristic city with crystalline spires way off in the distance. The overall size of each pencil drawing measures 14" x 11" and the art is in Excellent condition.
