    S. Clay Wilson Berkeley Barb "The Checkered Demon" Comic Strip Original Art Group of 5 Pages (1976). S. Clay Wilson's infamous character, the shirtless, Tree Frog Beer-drinking horned devil known as the Checkered Demon, first appeared in Zap Comix #2 in a story titled "The Hog Ridin' Fools." The Demon became so popular that in 1976, Wilson crafted a series of daily-style comic strips that were first published in the notorious alternative newspaper, The Berkeley Barb, and later complied in a series of self-titled comic books published by Last Gasp. Here's an incredible collection of five pages, each with three strips, continuing the storyline of the Demon captured by evil Arab slavers. Each page is dated; 5/76, 6/76, 8/76, 9/76, and 10/76. Each strip is in ink over blue pencil, with an approximate image area of 10" x 3.5", plus a hand-drawn logo. Two strips have small paste-ups (one is a tiny print of a young Bob Dylan playing harmonica). The pages are from a spiral-bound pad of Bristol board measuring 11" x 14". Overall condition is Very Good. Please remember to support the S. Clay Wilson Special Needs Trust online to help this legendary artist with his ongoing medical bills, from his 2008 accident that forever left him unable to work. From the Eric Sack Collection.

I have done a preliminary analysis and the total of the hammer prices was $67,550. With BP, the final figure was $80,722.25. That is against the total insurance value of $34,785 or 2.32 x ‘pre-auction estimate’. Incredible, really, so a big thanks.
