Rube Goldberg Phoney Films #116 Original Art dated 11-17-14 (Hearst Corp., 1914). It is impossible to overstate Goldberg's importance to the comics -- and to popular culture-at-large. Even before his masterful creation of Boob McNutt (1915-1934), the prolific engineer-turned-cartoonist had launched more than half-a-dozen features, including the sarcastic Phoney Films. This one examines the Generation Gap before there was a term for it. Goldberg also co-founded the National Cartoonists Society, whose Reuben Award is named in his honor. This gem of a strip is comprised of ink over graphite, on Bristol board, with an image area of 23" x 11", including Goldberg's signed marginal notations. Framed out to 30.5" x 18". Moderate age-toning. Conspicuous scuffing in the painted frame. Art itself in Excellent condition.
