Roy Crane Hash and Topsy Student Comic Strip Original Art (Chicago Academy, 1920). Wow! Pardon our excitement, but this large, little-seen early work by Roy Crane (of Buz Sawyer and Captain Easy) is as rare a rarity as we've run across lately. It's a student piece from the 18-year-old Crane's hitch at the Chicago Academy of Fine Arts -- two years before he broke into print as an assistant to the great H.T. Webster at the New York World. A faded autograph, with personalized inscription, appears at lower margin. A Crane pencil sketch (reverse side) compounds the unusual nature of this seminal gem. Ink over graphite on Bristol board. Image area, 20" x 6.25". Moderate toning. Generally Excellent condition. From A Collection of Great Cartoonists and Illustrators.
