    Description

Rory Hayes Insect Fear #3 "The Midnight Monster" Complete 4-Page Story Original Art (Print Mint, 1972). Ah, Rory Hayes, the "Grandma Moses" of Underground Comix! Such a fascinating artist. Rory's upbringing was remarkably similar to that of Robert Crumb's: self-taught, drawing personal comics from an early age, guided by an older brother, with plenty of insecurities and personal hang-ups. His work, largely inspired by horror comics of the 1950s, was greatly admired by many of his peers. As a teenager, Rory worked in Gary Arlington's San Francisco Comic Book Company store, which was something of a hang-out for many of the Bay Area's alternative cartoonists. Although never very prolific, his work appeared in several Underground anthology titles during his brief career. This four-pager, from the last issue of the strange Insect Fear, is one of his best, representing some of the most detailed and finished comic art produced by this artist. It's drawn in a style resembling scratchboard technique on heavy sketchbook paper, in ink on paper; per-page image sizes are an approximate 9" x 12.5". Three of the pages have a bit of handling wear; condition is Very Good to Excellent. The unique comic art of Rory Hayes, recently featured in the book, Where Demented Wented, is finally being discovered by a new generation! From the Eric Sack Collection.
