Robert Crumb Zap Comix #1 Unused Cover Original Art (1967). In the fall of 1967, Robert Crumb had been contacted by a publisher interested in producing a standard-size comic book, which had been Crumb's dream for many years. After toying with several titles, he went with Zap Comix ("plugs you in"), and he created this cover art to adorn the first of what he had hoped to be a long run of issues. The beauty of the Underground Comix scene which had been bubbling up through pages printed in alternative newspapers was that "anything goes," so Crumb unfettered his inhibitions totally with this image of a naked man, his "package" flapping about," and an electrical cord jammed in his posterior. He went so far as to create two hand-drawn color separations (which had been his first job at Cleveland's American Greetings card company), and was ready to send it in when he got cold feet, and scrapped it for a much tamer version (that eventually saw print as Zap #0 -- but that's another story). According to Graham Nash, who has owned this art for many years, "The Zap #1 cover is, I believe, a very important piece in the arc of Robert's journey as a great artist. He has to confront censorship for the first time, and you can see why. This long-lost piece is a wonder to behold."
The art is in three pieces, matted and framed with Plexiglas together in a frame measuring 33" x 17". The main (black print plate) piece is in ink on Bristol board, with an approximate image area of 8" x 10.75". The plates for orange and yellow ink are also in ink on Bristol. The main art was featured in print only once that we know of, in Volume 4 of The Complete Crumb Comics (Fantagraphics, 1989). We would love to see it reprinted in 3-colors, as originally intended, but that's not likely to happen. There is some visible handling wear and toning of the art boards, with tiny slices cut from the edges of the two color plate pieces; overall condition is Very Good. From the Graham Nash Collection.
