Robert Crumb Zap Comix #0 Complete 5-Page Story "City of the Future" Original Art (Apex Novelties, 1968). This five page story, drawn by the best-loved of the Underground Comix artist, Robert Crumb, not only looks interesting, but has a fascinating story behind it.
In 1967, Robert has his first "solo" comic published, a special issue of Philadelphia's alternative tabloid paper, Yarrowstalks. When the publisher mentioned his desire to print a traditional comic book format issue of comics, Robert jumped at the chance, completing not one but two 24-page plus covers comics, to be called Zap Comix #1 (the art for this issue finished in October) and #2 (finished in November). Crumb sent the art for the first issue off to Philadelphia, only to discover later that the publisher had disappeared with it (actually, he had gone to India), and Robert considered the artwork stolen. Meanwhile back in San Francisco, Don Donahue had expressed interest in publishing a Crumb comic, so the contents for that second issue became the first, with a redrawn cover added. Eventually, Crumb found a set of photocopies of the original comic, and had it published as Zap #0.
Several years later, the "stolen" artwork was returned to Crumb's lawyer, Albert Morse, but by this time, Robert was off traveling the country, and wife Dana received the pages, which were promptly sold. Crumb has always lamented the fact he never got the chance to photograph the original art for later reprints of Zap #0, but those pages have since spread across the globe.
Here are five of those original pages, a Science Fiction spoof called "City of the Future." The artwork is in ink on Bristol board, each page with an approximate image area of 7.5" x 10"; all have been professionally matted and framed with Plexiglas, for an overall size of 14.5" x 17.25". The pages have a few minor stains along the top of each page, but nothing too distracting, and are otherwise in Excellent condition. For hardcore Crumb art collectors, this is an incredible and rare opportunity to own a set of notorious pages from one of the true granddaddies of Underground Comix. They may all be "just lines on paper, folks" but oh, what lines!
