Description
Robert Crumb San Francisco Comic Book #2 Complete 3-Page Story "The Skating Vanities Presents Gloria Nord" Original Art (San Francisco Comic Book Co., 1970). Voluptuous, athletic women are a constant in Crumb's cartooning -- none more voluptuous or athletic than Gloria Nord, roller-skating champion and object of the lustful attentions of those big-nosed horndog goofballs, Av 'n' Gar. These signature characters careen toward a glorious disaster of a crash-landing in an essential example of the Underground Comix movement, in full flower. Any Crumb of this vintage is a rarity -- even more so, to surface intact in a full-length story of such uniformly well-preserved condition. The large-scale layout (approximately 1.5 times the published dimensions) is unusual for Crumb, who more often worked at a smaller scale during his taboo-busting Underground period. Nudity and violent erotica are a foregone conclusion. Crumb had taken the leading lady's name from the real-world Gloria Nord, star of the stage production of Gae Foster's Roller Follies of 1942, who was cover-featured in the wholesome Calling All Girls magazine #8, published in 1942, a year before Crumb's birth. "A copy of that magazine probably had belonged to one of my sisters," Crumb told a playwright collaborator, Michael H. Price. "The name resonated with me." The Crumb version of Gloria Nord had originated in 1969's Big Ass Comics, as a rival of the pistol-packing cowgirl Dale Steinberger. Supporting players Av 'n' Gar (a pun on avant-garde) were recurring figures among Crumb's early-day cast of characters (as in 1968's Head Comix), sometimes appearing under such aliases as Itzy 'n' Bitzy and the Simp & the Gimp. Ink over graphite with Zipatone shading film on lightweight Bristol stock, with a range in image areas from 10.5" x 14.75" to 11" x 15.25". Light overall toning throughout. Page 1 has slightly darker toning around the edges, with moisture damage on the lower edge, and a tan-yellowish darkening in the fine-grain Zipatone film (in the main title). Panel 2, Page 1, has an adhesive-stained lettering correction and, at the lower edge, light spot-staining. Page 3 has an irregular right-edge trim. Otherwise, in Excellent condition.More information about Robert Crumb, also known as Crumb, Robert, Robert Crumb, Crumb, R., R. Crumb.
