    Description

Robert Crumb, S. Clay Wilson, Victor Moscoso, Spain Rodriguez, Rick Griffin, Robert Williams, and Gilbert Shelton Zap Comix #12 2-Page Jam Comic Strip Original Art Plus Two Bonus Unpublished Panels (Last Gasp, 1989). Another classic "Zap Jam" with all the artists throwing in; however, this one is a bit different than what came before. The jams were a Zap tradition that began with issue #3; the format involved getting together and passing the page around with each artist drawing panels and adding to what had laid down by the other guys. Most of these jams have very little in the way of linear storylines -- it was simply whatever popped into each artist's head at the moment. This one, titled "Rotten to the Core," tells more of a story, and with good reason, as it was created in conjunction with an art exhibit at New York's Psychedelic Solution gallery. We witness a bizarre assortment of characters on their way to the exhibit, including Crumb's Mode O'Day, Wilson's Checkered Demon, William's Coochy Cootie (with his girlfriend Dainty Dimples), and more -- even old-time comedian Jimmy Durante gets into the act! The art was published first as posters and post cards for the show, and later in Zap, as two pages each with four tiers of panels. Those two pages are here, along with a very special bonus of an extra tier. These two previously unseen panels, with art by Wilson, Williams, Rodriguez, and Moscoso, were edited out of the final version, but fit in-between the two pages nicely.
So why were there two extra panels? After weeks during production, Rich Griffin and his two panels were nowhere to be found. So these two new panels were created to replace the space allotted to the exclusive Griffin panels. He then came through with the art and this became one of only two jams created by the entire original Zap Seven! There were not a lot of jams created (in the style of the surrealists' Exquisite Corpse), and this was the last to represent all of the original members.
The art is in ink and whiteout over graphite and light blue pencil on thin board; the two full pages each have an image size of 12" x 17.5". The extra tier has an image size of 12" x 4.25". On all three, the tiers and/or panels are on separate pieces of board, assembled in order. All are matted and framed with glass. Excellent condition on all. From the Eric Sack Collection.
