    Description

Robert Crumb Promethean Enterprises #3 Fanzine Cover Original Art (Promethean Enterprises, 1971). This great cover image of a man running to escape the contents of several chest-of-drawers appears to have the "unspeakable" title of @#*!!! (or something like that). It saw print as the third cover to Jim Vadeboncoeur Jr.'s excellent "prozine" (a professionally produced fanzine), Promethean Enterprises in 1971. This is the kind of image we can only imagine R. Crumb drawing -- who else could think up such a thing? The art is in ink over faint graphite guide lines on sketchbook paper or thin board, with an approximate image area of 8" x 10.75", matted and framed with Plexiglas for an overall size of 16.5" x 22". A hand-cut sheet of amberlith (for showing a second color when printed) is also included. Excellent condition. The art is featured on page 106 of the French Museum of Modern Art catalog for R. Crumb De l'underground a la Genese. From the Eric Sack Collection.

I have done a preliminary analysis and the total of the hammer prices was $67,550. With BP, the final figure was $80,722.25. That is against the total insurance value of $34,785 or 2.32 x ‘pre-auction estimate’. Incredible, really, so a big thanks.
