Robert Crumb Hulp Comics Self Portrait Cover Original Art (Last Gasp, 1992). R. Crumb, the tortured artiste, is surrounded by torn copies of his comic books as he swears to corral his compulsion to draw "sex fantasies," in this cover for a never-realized project for Underground publishing firm Last Gasp. The title and logo design reference his three-issue Hup series, as well as a word Crumb's character Flakey Foont has been known to utter from time to time. We really don't know the reasoning behind Crumb's decision to abandon this title, but the artwork did finally see print, in the 2001 book of collected Crumb art, Odds & Ends.
The art is in ink and whiteout on Bristol board, with an approximate image area of 9" x 12.5", and is in Excellent condition. Crumb is a master of shading with crosshatch lines, and he's really gone to town with this piece, with such rich textures that it almost takes on a "3-D" effect. While the image printed in Odds & Ends does not carry a signature, the original art does, in the bottom right corner, dated '92. The art is in Excellent condition.
Just about any Robert Crumb piece of artwork will attract a lot of attention from collectors, even a quickly dashed off doodle, but owning this exquisite self-portrait cover art will be like a dream come true for the most devoted Zap Comix fan. It may only be "lines on paper" as Crumb has famously said about his artwork, but hey, what incredible lines they are!
