    Description

Robert Crumb - Complete Sketchbook Original Art (c. 1970).

This deceptive little item, with its innocent "Thirsty Camel" children's book cover, is in fact a publisher's blank-page book mock-up, turned into a 62-page sketchbook by Robert Crumb (plus the two inside covers). It's loaded with page after page of incredible inked doodles and sketches from one of Crumb's best-loved periods, when he was still cranking out legendary comics like Motor City Comics #2, Despair, Mr. Natural #1, and of course, Zap Comix (issue #5 came out in 1970). Flipping through the 8" x 10.75" pages, you'll encounter plenty of Crumb's regular characters, including Mr. Natural, Projunior, Flakey Foont, Forky O'Donnell, even R. Crumb himself. There are pages of cars, naked women, men in 19th Century clothing, naked girls, funny animals, and... oh yes, more naked girls! There are even two unsigned pages by Robert's Zap friends Gilbert Shelton and Spain Rodriguez!
This has to be one of the very best of Crumb's sketchbooks that has remained intact (most that were sold have since had all pages removed, even having two-sided pages professionally separated for resale). It has survived all these years for one simple reason -- Robert gifted this book to his son, Jesse, who has carefully held on to it, only now relinquishing it for sale through Heritage Auctions. Quite a few of these images will be familiar to longtime fans, including a group of pages reprinted in the deluxe museum book R. Crumb, published in Paris in 2012 (interesting to note that after the pages were printed, Robert went back in and added some extra detail and corrections to some pages in the sketchbook, using whiteout and ink; this may have been done for the lavish six-volume R. Crumb Sketchbook boxed set put out recently by Taschen). It's one of the most remarkable items from Crumb we've seen -- and we've seen some pretty awesome things come through our doors lately! It's going to be the ultimate prize for one lucky collector of R. Crumb/Underground Comix art! The book's pages are in overall Very Good condition, with the Roger Bradford printed cover in about Good condition. You can see every page of the book in a video on the lot listing at HA.com.
