Robert Crumb CoEvolution Quarterly Complete 5-Page Story Original Art (Whole Earth Catalog/Stuart Brand, 1978). "Knowledge, pal, is an illusion!" The mind just can't know it, in this five-pager titled "The Nerds." The mid-to-late 1970s can be considered Robert Crumb's "wilderness years," as the excesses of fame and problems at home drove him just a little bit crazy. Demand for more and more of his wildly imaginative Zap Comix-type material left him searching for new characters to please his fans (and publishers), even as his creative juices were stalling on him. As a result, odd one-off stories like this appeared; it was originally created for Stuart Brand's offshoot from The Whole Earth Catalog, and later reprinted in Crumb's 1979 solo, Best Buy Comics. The squat, naked, grim little men here have an existential conversation that echoes the kind of talks Robert and his brother Charles often had in their teen years, about politics, religion, making it in the big rat race -- hey, life isn't always a laugh riot! Sometimes you just gotta go grab a cuppa coffee and an apple fritter and let it all work itself out, right Nerds? Art is in ink on white Bristol board with an image area of 8.25" X 12". In Excellent condition. From the Eric Sack Collection.
