Description

Robert Crumb CoEvolution Quarterly #18 Complete 4-Page Story "Kansas City Frank in Pass the Jug" Original Art (Stewart Brand, 1978). Two Jazz musicians are shootin' the breeze in this remarkable look back at a forgotten time. Robert Crumb's biggest passion (after sex, of course) has always been music; in particular, the 1920s-30s Jazz and Blues songs issued on those old ten-inch 78 RPM records. His interest in the history of that long-ago time is so great that historical-themed stories like this were a natural for him. This is his first such story. It was the highlight of one of Crumb's solo titles, Best Buy Comics, when the story was reprinted there, even though there's no sex or nudity, just two guys sitting around talking or playing the piano. And by the way, Kansas City Frank was a real musician ("Pass the Jug" was one of his records), as are all the names mentioned in the story.
The artwork is in ink and graphite on Bristol board, with each page image area measuring approximately 8" x 12". Each page has been professionally matted, using archival materials, to an overall size of 16" x 19.5", ready to frame and hang. All pages are in Excellent condition.
Jay Kennedy, author of 1984's influential book, The Official Underground and Newave Comix Price Guide, owned the art for this story for many years, and it remained in the Kennedy family after his passing in 2007. We believe this to be one of R. Crumb's very best short comic stories from the 1970s, and are proud to offer the original artwork in this auction. As Frank says in panel five from page one, "'s th' good stuff!"
