Robert Crumb "Avenue D" American Scene Illustration Original Art (1966). The first important exhibition of Robert Crumb's artwork came close to a year before the publication of Zap Comix #1. The event, organized by a friend of Dana's mother, was called "The American Scene," held from May 17 until June 25, 1967 in Peoria, IL (actually, Crumb remembers the event as taking place in 1966, but the catalog is dated '67). There were 36 drawings exhibited, including this piece titled "Avenue D." The original catalog for the exhibit listed this as #8, with a price of $85. A photo from that event of Robert and his first wife Dana, holding this drawing of a street scene in Cleveland, exists (and can be found online).
This large illustration is drawn in ink edge-to-edge on paper measuring 14.5" x 18", nicely matted and framed with Plexiglas for an overall size of 23" x 27". The art is slightly sun struck from an old framing; otherwise, the condition remains Excellent. Crumb's Peoria drawings rarely come up for sale, and this one is an especially nice representation of his pre-"fuzzy period" art where a bad acid trip resulted in the creation of his classic Underground characters like Mr. Natural. From the Eric Sack Collection.
