Phil Davis Mandrake the Magician Daily Comic Strip Original Art dated 2-5-38 (King Features Syndicate, 1938). Mandrake can claim pride-of-place as the funnies' first costumed superhero -- with a four-year head-start on Superman. This sequence finds Mandrake applying a talent for supernatural ventriloquism to expose a criminal scam. Lee Falk had created Mandrake in the dual capacity of writer-artist, but then enlisted Phil Davis, a more polished illustrator, to draw the feature. Davis inscribed this episode to teenage cartoonist Jack Kent, who would grow up to become the creator of the acclaimed comic strip King Aroo. Ink over graphite on Bristol board. Image area, 20.5" x 4.5". Excellent condition. From the Jack Kent Collection.

I have done a preliminary analysis and the total of the hammer prices was $67,550. With BP, the final figure was $80,722.25. That is against the total insurance value of $34,785 or 2.32 x ‘pre-auction estimate’. Incredible, really, so a big thanks.
