Paul von Klieben "California or Bust" Ghost Town Painting (c. 1940s-50s). Artist Paul von Klieben began his partnership with Walter Knott by completing the original Cyclorama painting that showcased Knott's grandparents coming out of the desert, headed for California. If there was but one stand-alone painting that drew from that first Knott/von Klieben project, it's this magnificent panorama titled "California or Bust". It's an amazing original painting on board measuring a whopping 151" x 57". More than ten horse- and mule-drawn wagons being hauled over the mountains are depicted in this amazing Von Klieben original. Painting is on two board sections; a 20" x 52" section was needed to add to the original board to complete the painting. There is a small space between the two boards. It's in the original frame that still that has bolt holes from where it was mounted, for security reasons, to the wall in Ghost Town. The massive painting is hand-signed in the bottom left corner by Mr. von Klieben. The first wagon leading the entourage has "California or Bust" on the wagon cover. The minor handling, scratches, and surface wear are from more than 60 years of public display. Overall Very Good condition. A very important painting!
