    Description

Paul Coker Jr. MAD #103 Complete 2-Page Story "Horrifying Clichés" Original Art (EC Comics, 1966). The game of literalizing figures of speech would become a routine with Coker at MAD, but the gimmick had originated outside MAD, in a book called Alvin Steadfast on Vernacular Island (1965), by Frank Jacobs and Edward Gorey. Jacobs, of course, was also a MAD regular, and the English language contains more clichés than could ever fitted fitted into one book. Hence Coker's long-running occasional series. This initial installment contains the likes of "Delivering a Veiled Threat," "Pulling a Boner," and "Escaping the Doldrums." Coker and a variety of MAD scribes would lunch out for years on such literalized expressions. Ink and ink wash over graphite on a single Bristol board. Image area, 24" x 15". Light toning and marginal staining. One patched-in art correction. Excellent condition. From the MAD Collection of Annie Gaines Ashton.
