William Van Horn - Donald Duck #286, page 9 Original Art (Gladstone, 1994). To celebrate the 60th anniversary of Donald Duck's first appearance (in the Silly Symphony cartoon, "The Wise Little Hen"), Gladstone threw the old boy, er, duck a party! And so, the bottom half of the page is a joyous celebration as Huey, Dewey and Louie wish their Unca Donald a Happy Birthday. William Van Horn was a superb candidate to follow in the giant footsteps of Carl Barks. Rather than merely aping the "Good Duck Artist's" style, Van Horn added a touch of George "Krazy Kat" Herriman-styled whimsy to his duck pages. This placed Donald and company into a fanciful, slightly askew world, and a duck-waddle away from the usual Burbank-style Duckburg. This page was drawn oversize, in two pieces taped at the back for an overall size of 18" x 24.5", with an image area measuring 16" x 23". It's in Excellent condition and signed at the bottom by Van Horn. A copy of Donald Duck #286 is included with this page.
