    Description

Will Eisner The Spirit Section "The Perfect Crime" Page 7 Original Art dated 1-5-47 (Will Eisner, 1947). "The Perfect Crime" was a classic Will Eisner tale of a criminal who is defeated by the very thought of capture by the Spirit, even though the masked crimefighter was incapacitated the entire time, many hundreds of miles away in a hospital bed. It's the kind of morality play Eisner was famous for, and this moody, rain-drenched final page, with Baxter finally done in by his own superstition and fear, is the master at his best. The image of the Spirit, looking down on the dying man, had been drawn there by Baxter himself on the wall in chalk; in a rage, he punched the image so hard he injured his hand, which became infected -- the real cause of his death. This well-paced page is in ink and graphite on Bristol board, and has an approximate image area of 13" x 18". There's the usual amount of handling wear along the outer borders, but no serious problems otherwise; the image remains in Excellent condition.
