Wally Wood Lunar Tunes Story Page 24 Original Art (1981). One of Wood's last compositions -- part-drawing, part-collage -- finds the master in an experimental phase. Though plagued by illness and professional frustrations, Wood bristled yet with humorous and provocative ideas. Wood characterized the technique as a takeoff on his pal Jack Kirby's cosmic-collage panoramas of the 1960s' Fantastic Four books. This page appears to be a continuation of a "Lunar Tunes" episode that had begun in the closing issue of Wood's Witzend magazine. The elfin character is Pip the Pipsqueak, whom Wood had introduced almost a generation earlier. (There also is a resemblance to Wood's Bucky Ruckus, a Buck Rogers spoof.) The closing panel contains an array of embittered philosophical quips, similar in tone to Ambrose Bierce's 1906 satire, The Devil's Dictionary. An accompanying reproduction contains Bill Pearson's re-lettering. Ink, Zipatone shading, and collage effects over graphite on Bristol board and other hand-cut clip-file stock. Image area, 13" x 16.5". Moderate toning and spot-staining. Very Good condition.
