Description

Wally Wood Captain Action #1 Story Page 10 Original Art (DC Comics, 1968). Wood longed for the freedom of the Underground Comix scene while remaining grounded in the corporate mainstream. Captain Action, based upon a doll from Ideal Toys, provided decent paydays that Wood would plough back into his maverick publishing ventures, such as Witzend magazine. This origin sequence establishes heroic Captain Action as a composite of mythological deities -- looks as though scripter Jim Shooter (Legion of Super-Heroes) had been cribbing ideas from Fawcett Comics' Captain Marvel, down to the finer detail of a Shazam-like wizard. Wood's layout reflects the influence of his mentor, Harvey Kurtzman -- confining the wordy dialogue to the upper-panel areas, the better to keep the balloons from intruding upon the drawings. Wood once told us that he did not enjoy working for Shooter's boss, editor Mort Weisinger ("a crabby old so-and-so"), but nonetheless relished "those generous page-rates, sweetened by money from the toy company." Ink over graphite on Bristol board. Dimensions, 10" x 15" overall. Excellent condition, with minimal toning.
