Vaughn Bode - Original Art for Deadbone Erotica #18, page 3, "U-22" (1970). As much a cultural phenomenon as a comic strip artist, Vaughn Bode's characters inhabit a unique, off-beat, yet oddly comfortable world teeming with sex, drugs and rock-and-roll. A master of dialogue, Bode twisted the English language to suit his purposes, much like Walt Kelly, whose Pogo patois can clearly be seen as an influence. Providing inspiration to millions of developing artists (including Ralph "Wizards" Bakshi and graffiti artists worldwide), Bode died tragically in 1975 at the age of 34, leaving behind a body of work that is still read and appreciated today. Originally published in the pages of Cavalier Magazine, Deadbone Erotica is one of Vaughn Bode's seminal works. Drawing on countless counter-cultural references, Bode's work is at once surreal and hypnotic. Possessing an almost hallucinogenic quality, this page is a fully-painted gem. Measuring approximately 19" x 24.5" overall, with an image area of approximately 20" x 15", the page is in excellent condition and is protected by a tissue overlay. Bode's work, rarely offered for sale, is becoming recognized as fine art, worthy of a place in the finest collections.
