Todd McFarlane Amazing Spider-Man #316 "Dead Meat" Page 24 Original Art in Display Case (Marvel, 1989). Spider-Man is about to give up his search for Venom and go home, when the evil Symbiote shows his "face" in this extraordinary page by Todd McFarlane. Todd's mastery of detail is well showcased in these panels, which have Spidey doing his thing, gliding over the city by way of his intricate "spaghetti" webbing. It's a wonderful sight, made even better by the dynamic 3-D display, featuring the art, printed page, and comic cover set among staggered images of Manhattan.
Todd's career in comics got kickstarted with his work on Amazing Spider-Man, and with the Venom stories, he really hit his stride. He was the first artist to draw the supervillain's full form in all its inky splendor, and fans just couldn't get enough. His superstar status at Marvel led to the creation of a new title (Spider-Man), and eventually Spawn and the Image Comics line. McFarlane Spider-Man originals are one of the hottest things going among collectors these days, generating huge prices for his cover art. Choice panel pages are really heating up as well, and this page is one of the best we've seen to date. The art is in ink over blue pencil on Bristol board, with an approximate image area of 10" x 15", and the shadow-box display measures 34" x 30". The shot of buildings in panel one is a photostatted image added by the artist, who also signed the page in the left border area. The artboard has a very minor amount of toning, but overall, this is in Excellent condition. From the Personal Collection of Frank Mastromauro.
