    Description

Steve Stiles (as Ingram) Grave Tales #2 Page 21 Original Art (Hamilton Comics, 1991). The spirit of EC Comics mainstay Wally Wood hovers over this fine homage to EC's horror titles of the 1950s. Stiles combines the influence of Wood and two other EC stalwarts, Johnny Craig and Graham "Ghastly" Ingels, but the style hews closer to Wood -- especially in the facial contours and the layered application of Zipatone shading film. (Both Stiles and lettering artist Bill Pearson had been associates of Wood during his independent-publisher phase of the 1960s.) There is an allusion to the anti-comics purge of the 1950s, including a book fashioned after crackpot reformer Frederick Wertham's tract, Seduction of the Innocent. Ink and shading film over graphite on Bristol board. Image area, 10.75" x 15". Faint toning. Excellent condition.
