Robert Crumb Snatch Comics #1 Double Page Original Art (Apex Novelties, 1968). Guys, better put your dark glasses on; ladies, you may want to turn away. R. Crumb lets his id run wild with these Snatch Comics drawings, which appeared in issue #1, pages 22 and 3 (page numbers are written along the top border area). There's been a lot of online discussion lately about Crumb's more sexually-oriented art, which sometimes included violence (as does the page 3 drawing here). The early fans of Underground Comix in general, and Crumb in particular, never took this kind of material seriously, figuring it was just Robert being a "punk," pushing the envelope as far as he could for the sake of a few laughs and to outrage all the "uptight" people, but this kind of thing obviously affects some folks adversely. It's certainly not for all tastes, but for those collectors searching out material from Crumb's peak Comix period, these two drawings will be tough to top. The art is in ink over light graphite on one piece of paper; the combined image area measures approximately 9.5" x 6.75". On the reverse is a penciled goodbye note from "Danie" (the late Dana Crumb, Robert's first wife) that also mentions their son Jesse. Robert Crumb recently confirmed to us that this was "one of many goodbyes we had with each other over the years. I was always running away and then crawling back, burdened with overwhelming guilt." The art is in Excellent condition, and includes an R. Crumb signature.
