Description

Peter Gross The Books of Magic #39 Story Page 1 Original Art (DC Comics/Vertigo, 1997). Which came first -- The Books of Magic, or the Harry Potter franchise? Resemblances are strong, especially in the bookish and boyish aspect shared by the respective central characters. Of course, Neil Gaiman had originated The Books of Magic in 1993, well before J.K. Rowling's first Harry Potter novel. This finely designed page appeared, well into a long post-Gaiman run, during the same year as Potter's debut. Gross depicts vividly the confusion of Tim Hunter, who is "destined to become the world's greatest mage." Ink over graphite on Bristol board, with drybrush and Zipatone effects. Image area, 10.5" x 15.75". Light toning, marginal color-guide notes, and one pink felt-tip smudge (upper left). Excellent condition.
