    Description

Jose Gonzales Vampirella #25 Story Page 13 Original Art (Warren Publ., 1973). From tentative beginnings as a puerile cheesecake fantasy of Famous Monsters editor Forrest J Ackerman, Vampirella matured gradually into an earnest study of mortality, loyalty, and self-sacrifice. The development had plenty to do with Gonzales' emotive artwork, helped along by such thoughtful and provocative writers as Bill DuBay (represented on this page). Never mind that the feature retained the title character's skimpy wardrobe. This splendid page involves a lethal attack, fueled by the leading lady's reaction to an inflicted drug overdose. And yes, the name of Vampirella is a takeoff on Jean-Claude Forest's Barbarella, as published in France in 1964. Ink and ink wash over graphite on Bristol board. Image area, 11" x 15". Extensive adhesive staining, with loosened patches of narrative text. Good condition.

I have done a preliminary analysis and the total of the hammer prices was $67,550. With BP, the final figure was $80,722.25. That is against the total insurance value of $34,785 or 2.32 x ‘pre-auction estimate’. Incredible, really, so a big thanks.
