Description

John Byrne and Terry Austin X-Men #137 page 44 Original Art (Marvel, 1980). The death of Phoenix is remembered by anyone who read comics in the 1980s, and many a tear was shed by readers of the tale, whether they admit it today or not! Here we're just two pages from the end of this classic -- Jean Grey's life ended on the very next page, and a requiem by the Watcher brought the book to a close. You'll notice the top of the art says "rewrite" -- the Jim Shooter-mandated plot change has been so well-documented we need not discuss it here, but Byrne later called the finished product his favorite art job to that point. "All the little details right down the line, the reactions, the tiny little faces, the bodily poses, everything just clicked. It clicked perfectly." This superb page has an image area of 10" x 15", and the art is in Excellent condition.
