John Byrne and Terry Austin X-Men #108 Page 31 Original Art (Marvel, 1977). For Byrne's first issue as penciler of this series, he not only had to replace the new X-Men's co-creator Dave Cockrum, Byrne had to draw a story with tons of guest stars and supporting characters, in which he had to portray Phoenix literally saving the entire universe. No pressure! Of course, Byrne was up to the challenge, and this kicked off a four-year run by Byrne, Austin, and writer Chris Claremont that more than a few collectors call their all-time favorite comic run to this day. Joining Phoenix here are Cyclops, Firelord, Lilandra, Professor X, Colossus, and Storm, plus Jean Grey's parents and her roommate Misty Knight... among others. The last panel dedicates the issue to Cockrum, and includes the clarification "I'm not dead -- Dave Cockrum." Signed by Byrne at lower left. This piece has an image area of 10" by 14.25". There is some paper tanning, white-out corrections, some staining near Byrne's signature, and two clipped corners. Also, Lilandra's entire word balloon in panel four is a stripped-in correction. Very Good condition.
