John Byrne and Dan Green Iron Fist #15 Page 16 X-Men Original Art With Mary Jane Sketch (Marvel, 1977). While not the first time Byrne drew the X-Men (he rendered them for a couple of pages in Marvel Team-Up #53) this was his first complete story featuring the team, and like the main X-Men title, this was written by Chris Claremont. What more can you ask for than Colossus, Nightcrawler, and Wolverine all using their powers on one page? An interesting note for hardcore X-Men fans: if you look closely at the underpenciling, particularly panel 5, you can see that Byrne penciled the mask of the traditional Wolverine costume rather than the short-lived "Fang of the Imperial Guard" gear. Byrne mentioned on his website, "One of [Dave Cockrum's] last official acts as penciler of Uncanny X-Men was to redesign Wolverine's costume. The new suit was introduced right before I came aboard." According to Byrne, Cockrum was tasked with redrawing the costume throughout this Iron Fist issue as well as changing some of the X-Men faces. Thanks to an oddity of publishing schedules, this September 1977 issue ended up being the debut of the "Fang" costume, appearing a month before X-Men #107 when Cockrum introduced it. By the way, while panel 5 isn't the first time the "fastball special" maneuver was seen, it was the first time it was drawn by Byrne. Signed by Byrne in panel 5. The back of this piece has a very cool bonus: a Byrne pencil sketch of Mary Jane Watson in a Red Sonja outfit -- an early visualization of something that would appear in the comics a year and a half later in Marvel Team-Up #79. The art is in ink over graphite on Bristol board with an image area of 10" x 15" and is in Excellent condition.
