Joe Kubert and Norman Maurer Studio - "Mighty Mouse in 3-D" Page Original Art, Group of 35 (St. John, circa 1953). Mighty Mouse and his foes battle in three dimensions, in each of these multi-layered pages of art. Norman Maurer's brother, Leonard, came up with the first 3-D process for comics. Here's a quote from Maurer taken from Ray Zone's web page, "Even though it was Joe's (Kubert) remark, 'Gee, wouldn't it be great if we could make a 3-D comic book?' (when he, Norm and I were driving past the marquee of the Paramount Theater where 'Bwana Devil' was playing) that got me thinking about 3-D comics. At the time, Norman was visiting New York to work out a normal 10-cent book editing deal for him and Joe. Later, while driving home to Queens over the Midtown bridge, the whole process (of) depth shifts suddenly popped into my head."To create the 3-D effect, each figure and background element is hand-inked onto several layers of acetate, which sit over a background on Craftint paper. The art measures approximately 13" x 19" and, aside from some overall aging, and flaking paint from the acetate overlays, the condition averages Good. From the John McLaughlin Collection.Auction Info
