Jim Starlin Marvel Graphic Novel #1 "The Death of Captain Marvel" Page 55 Thanos Original Art (Marvel, 1982). Check out that great half-splash page last panel featuring Captain Mar-Vell! There are so many reasons this book was remarkable that it's hard to know where to start. First off, it also features Thanos, who is enjoying a resurge in popularity from his appearances in recent Marvel movies. It was Marvel's first experiment into publishing a prestige format book... magazine sized and on better quality paper. It also featured one of the most shocking and lasting deaths in comic history. Captain Mar-Vell died, but not in battle. He succumbed to a cancer, caused by a specific past battle with an old foe. The artwork was supplied by the man most closely associated with the character, Jim Starlin. This half-splash page features a battle in the mind as Mar-Vell struggles against the forces of Death itself. The page is ink over graphite on illustration board with an image area of 12" x 17.5". The ink has discolored to a purple tint, and there is some slight overall tanning; also the board has been folded horizontally from side-to-side in the bottom splash panel, leaving a crease. Production tape residue is visible in the top and bottom margin. Overall in Good condition.
