Jim Aparo The Phantom Stranger #14 Story Page 13 Original Art (DC Comics, 1971). DC strained against the restrictive Comics Code when editor Joe Orlando sought to revive the horrific essence of EC Comics, where he had worked during the pre-Code 1950s. Aparo, a key artist in this movement, brought an EC-like attitude to The Phantom Stranger -- especially when illustrating Len Wein's taboo-testing stories. The grisly concept here has to do with an outlaw heart-transplant operation. The name of the villain, Broderick Rune, alludes to a classic horror story, M.R. James, "Casting the Runes," better known to movie buffs as Curse of the Demon. Ink over graphite on Bristol board. Image area, 10" x 15". Minimal adhesive residue (lower right). Excellent condition.
